Salary Negotiation Tips
Salary Negotiation Tips A colleague and I recently had a conversation about one of the classic salary negotiation traps that many people fall into when a hiring manager asks about their past salary. In this situation, the hiring manager asked how much the job seeker was currently making and assumed that this was the approximate number the candidate was looking to earn in their next position. What the hiring manager is doing is using the candidates past salary as a benchmark for what they should be earning in the future. This will often work against the candidate. All a past salary indicates is what someone was willing to pay that person at the time of the hire. It doesnt account for the candidates current market value or the current market value of the job they are applying for.Job seekers need to learn how to source information on their market value, so the conversation moves away from past salary and towards a salary request based on what the market will bear. They should ask colleagues and recruiters wha t the salary range is for certain positions, tap into salary information through professional organizations, and review online salary info through services such as salary.com and payscale.com. When asked the salary question, a better response is, My research indicates that typical salaries for positions such as these are between X and Y. Is that consistent with what the company is planning to offer? This way the job seeker shows the hiring manager that they are an educated consumer and at the same time they have not given away the store in terms of the negotiation process.

How LinkedIns Open Candidate Can Save You Time
How LinkedIns Open Candidate Can Save You Time If you are tired of your job and ready for a change, then you need to know about LinkedIns Open Candidate function. Heres the problem- searching for a job is time-consuming and hard to do well when you are working a full-time job. As a result, you may find yourself trapped in a job you dislike longer than you want because you dont have enough time to invest in a thorough job search. Sure, less time-consuming job search methods exist, but generate dismal results. For example, it doesnt take long for you to post a resume to a job site (or two). The fact is- recruiters prefer NOT to search posted resumes unless theyre desperate or have a very specific set of skills they are looking for. They dont know what they are getting and it is overwhelming to search resume databases, so its seldom the primary source for identifying candidates. The other trap all job seekers fall into is wasting time searching job boards and applying to any job that may look interesting. It isnt unusual for working job seekers to send a generic resume and cover letter. This shotgun approach results in less than 15% of hires, according to the Jobvite Index, which aggregates source of hire data from 2007 to the present. One of the biggest problems with searching for a job while employed is that you run the risk of your current employer finding out you are looking for a new job. Even talking with people in your network about your quest for a new job could get back to your boss if you arent careful. Announce Your Search (Secretly) Imagine if you could secretly let recruiters know that youd like to be contacted about new opportunities. This might increase your chances of a recruiter reaching out with an amazing opportunity. Now you can. LinkedIn released a new service called Open Candidates which enables your LinkedIn profile to indicate you are open to new opportunities. Only recruiters subscribing to the recruiter tool on LinkedIn can see this. Recruiters at your company or affiliated company recruiters will not be able to see you are open to new opportunities. Remember: Keep your job search confidential by reminding your network to keep your search private. Specify Your Job Interests Another benefit to the Open Candidates feature is that you can specify the job titles and industries you are interested in and the geographic locations you are open to. A major frustration has been that job seekers couldnt specify more than one industry. They also didnt know what city to list in their profile if they were interestedin relocating. To activate your preferences in Open Candidates, on your home page go to LinkedIn Jobs. In the pull-down menu select preferences. Research Companies It isnt enough to hope that recruiters find you. You have to proactively target companies that seem like they would be a good fit. This requires you research each target company and find people you can talk to. But lets say you just happen to hear about a job (of find in on a job board) and want to research the company. This typically requires using multiple sites and even then, you arent sure the information youve read is accurate. Yes, youve always been able to research companies using LinkedIn. But now, LinkedIn makes it easier through their newly released Career Pages. Companies will be able to provide an overview section, relevant jobs and more insight on corporate culture. Companies will need to pay to incorporate long-form written posts, photos, leader profiles and aggregate data on company and culture. 30 companies successfully piloted this employer branding and research feature and LinkedIn has decided to roll it out. Expect to see more career pages as more companies learn about it. These additional features should save you a lot of research time. Youll also get a 360-degree view of the company to help you understand what it will be like to work there. Check Out Employees Career Pages will also include even more valuable intelligence for job seekers. When you are on a companys career page, you will see job recommendations tailored specifically to you. Youll also see a section called Meet the Team which shows information about people in similar roles in the company. Youll see the job the person came from, their skills and the school they attended. As you look at this information, you can compare your skills and career path with theirs. You may also find that you attended the same school, which you can use during the interview to build rapport. Job Search The Right Way for Greater (and Faster) Success If you are employed and searching for your next job, take advantage of all the resources available to you. LinkedIns newest features should save you time, provide meaningful insight and allow you to easily identify people you know inside companies. This will help you can get the inside scoop and a leg up on the competition for the job. Remember, referred candidates are the number one source of external hires. Learn how to get referred! Guide To Gifting In The Workplace - Work It Daily
Guide To Gifting In The Workplace - Work It Daily After another round of holiday cheer, you're probably pretty sick and tired of gifts right now. Aren't we all? But you should remember gift-gifting is a social signal every bit as much as it is a personal gesture. The message you send to a family member with a gift could be vastly different than the one you send to a colleague, employee, or supervisor. Guide To Gifting In The Workplace If you didn't participate in this prior to Christmas, there's still time before the New Year, which in the professional world can be a much larger event. Here's a quick post-Christmas guide to gifting in the workplace: Gift Baskets Gift baskets can be ideal for just about anyone, especially a colleague you may not know on a personal level. The thing that makes these gift baskets so perfect is the fact that they can be customized to meet the preferences of each person on your list. Plus, gift baskets are available in various sizes and prices. In fact, you can easily create a gift basket from scratch. This allows you to tailor the gift basket precisely to the likes of the recipient. Plants People that enjoy indoor gardening are sure to appreciate a houseplant or even a small tree as a gift. Keep in mind that unique plants arrangements and things like bonsai trees make especially nice gifts. This is something about a living plant that will add a new dimension to the recipients' cubicle or workstation. There are a lot of options when it comes to the world of horticulture though, so before rushing out to the nursery you should do a little research and maybe check out the variety of different kinds of plants at ProPlants.com. Some of he best gifts can come in the form of workplace compensation. For example, if you're an employer or a supervisor consider the following: Ergonomic Chairs This one would work great as a colleague to colleague gift too, especially if someone has particular back pain. Incorporating ergonomic practices into the workplace keeps people healthier and happier. Ergonomics means âdesigning the job to fit the worker and not forcing the worker to fit the job.â When this premise is adhered to there is less physical stress put on vision, bones, joints tendons, muscles, nerves, hearing and health in general. What an amazing gift! Provide Healthy Food One of the best gifts you could possibly get for an employee is to provide healthy food options at the workplace. Instead of potato chips and coffee in the rec room, set out fruit, tea, and kombucha. If you build it, they will come - meaning if you provide healthy food options, people will consume them. Eating healthy food can go a long way toward helping employees and workplace associates stay healthy over the long-term. Another great option is to have lunch catered once a week by a whole or organic foods vendor. Allow Time For Rest When you want to promote health and your employees, it's important to allow plenty of time for rest. This is one of the best gifts of all. When you try to overwork your employees, they'll eventually perform poorly. Overworked individuals often tend to get sick as their immune systems weaken. Consider letting your employees off early every now and then. Give them days off and work with them when they need time off. Having time away from work is important to be able to keep your mind fresh and stay healthy. You could also look into providing resources to those who are trying to stop smoking or lose weight. Perhaps you could even offer incentives, which is a step in the right direction toward workplace wellness. The preceding gifts run the gamut, from traditional gift baskets and plants to more long-term gifts like ergonomic support and physical and mental health. The need for these kinds of gestures can't be overstated. Most people spend the majority of their waking life at the office. Make this space and your career trajectory a positive, giving atmosphere. Are there any other etiquette tips you can think of for gifting in the workplace? Photo Credit: Shutterstock Have you joined our career growth club?Join Us Today!

4 interview mistakes youre making in the first ten minutes
4 bewerbervorstellungsgesprch mistakes youre making in the first ten minutesBy Biron Clark googletag.cmd.push(function() googletag.display(div-gpt-ad-1467144145037-0) ) Most employers spend days or even weeks deciding if they want to hire you, but it only takes them a few seconds to rule you out. As an Executive Recruiter, Ive seen first-hand some crucial missteps from interviewees that have cost them the job. Here are four overlooked interview mistakes that are costing you job offers in the first 10 minutes of your interview.Youre trying to decide mid-interview if you want the jobYou should have one goal in your interview sell yourself and get invited to the next round in the process. Heres where many job seekers go wrong They abflug trying to decide if they want the job while also trying to sell them self and impress the interviewer. You can gather facts and ask questions to find out about the role (in fact you absolutely should), but never try to decide mid-interview if youre inte rested or not. Youll be distracted and wont sell yourself as effectively.Ive seen this happen over and over as a Recruiter with the people Ive coached and helped. For example, you might hear something that worries you about the job, and your energy level will drop. You might stop trying to impress them. Later in the interview, you might heara few great things and decide you are interested, but its too late you didnt seem excited about fruchtwein of the interview and theyre not going to invite you to continue. Its better to get invited to continue interviewing at companies youre not interested in than lose a single job offer you wanted because of this mistake. Wait until youre home to decide whether you are interested in their job.You dont seem confidentPeople gather a first impression visually before anything else. Within the first one or two seconds of seeing you, the interviewer is judging you even if they dont realize it. By the time youve followed them down the hallway and sat d own with them, theyve already gathered a strong impression of you whether its positive or negative. This is the importance of a good handshake, posture and overall body language. This isnt something you can turn on-and-off at will especially when youre tense and nervous in an interview. So start thinking about body language in everyday conversations to prepare for your interviews. Try to keep your shoulders back and your head up straight. When you sit down, avoid tapping your hands or feet or doing anything else that will distract the interviewer. Practice maintaining eye contact before your interview too, especially while talking (most people find it easy to hold eye contact while listening, but much more difficult while talking). Finally, make sure to show confidence in your abilities and your expertise when answering their questions.Youre the expert in your field of work. If not, why would they hire you?So show them you have great ideas to contribute and are ready to make an impact and use what you know to help them. This is what top employers look for.Youre worrying if the interviewer likes you or notPeople ask me all the time, how will I know if my interview is going well? Heres what I tell them Dont try.Always assume its going well and the company is interested in you. If you start to worry, youll lose confidence and then you will do badly (even if you were doing fine before). Some interviewers are friendly to everyone, even if they have no interest in hiring you. Other interviewers show little or no emotion even if they think youre the perfect fit for them.So stop worrying, and just assume youre giving great answers from start to finish. Itll be one less thing to worry about and will make your answers come out better. You didnt ask enough questionsNow, you might be thinking, hold on, Biron. I thought this article was about the first 10 minutes of the interview. Im supposed to ask my questions at the end, right?Thats correct, but you should also ask questio ns throughout the interview.Asking questions and gathering information shows them youre confident in your ability to find a job, and picky about which employer you choose to work for (both good things) So you want to mix questions into the conversation naturally, rather than waiting for them to invite you to do it. The simplest way to do this is to end some of your answers with a question directed back at them.Heres an example of how this might lookInterviewer Why do you think youre a good fit for this job?You Well, my biggest strength is in financial reporting, and from the job description, it seems like thats an area you need help with right now. Is that right? And if so, can you tell me a little more about the teams needs?Interviewer Yes, thats right. Our biggest expert just retired and we dont have enough people to do the work. We also need to make our reporting processes far more efficient. You Very interesting My last company actually had a pretty inefficient reporting process when I joined three years ago and I worked with them to improve it. Do you have a sense of where the process can be improved most? This creates a natural dialogue where you can share your knowledge and start to be seen as an expert. You dont need to do this with every question, but try to do it once within the first 10 minutes, and two or three times in each interview. If you follow the advice above, youll stick in employers minds and make them much more likely to hire you.About the author Biron is a career advice author, Founder of CareerSidekick.com, and former Executive Recruiter for more than 40 companies, including venture-funded tech startupsand Fortune 500 companies across the US and Europe.
